Leap-Year Babies’ Birthday Problems
It never occurred to me before I read an article today that anyone born on February 29 is in for a lifetime of social problems….
For starters, people born on leap year get questions about if they could really be born on Feb. 29 such as , “That’s not a real day, is it?” They also get perpetual questions like, “How old are you really?” or “What day do you really celebrate your birthday?”
More serious, many computer websites are not set up to handle February 29 birthdays. An added complication for some is the legal complication of whether a child becomes an adult on February 2, or March 1. (To me, it seems obvious that it would be March 1.)
Obstetricians say that many parents go to elaborate lengths to try to avoid having their children become leap-year babies. They ask if the delivery can be speeded up to happen the day before, or if it can be slowed down to fall the day after. Some women actually have early Cesarians just to avoid this problem!
