Ski in Dubai–Third Largest Indoor Snow Park in the World
I’ve noticed that it’s really hot in Dubai (when I was there the summer of 1990, it was about 117°F, 47°C), and what they crave is cold. So, in addition to the Ice Lounge (see previous post), Dubai now also has Ski Dubai, an indoor ski resort complex–the third largest indoor snow park in the world. The snow is real, although artificially produced.

There are five runs, which range from beginner’s slopes to advanced. the quad chairlifts hold four persons each. Lessons from ski instructors are available. Americans say the conditions compare well with American slopes (which seem to be superior to European slopes, according to skiers who have skied on both). The complex includes three themed restaurants, one midway on the slopes. You can rent all ski equipment and ski clothing.

Being originally from Colorado, and having skied many times at Vail, Copper Mountain, Breckenridge, Beaver Creek, Winter Park, and Loveland, I’d say that in appearance, they’ve done pretty well here.

It amazes me that they can build this, and the new “rotating sky scraper”, but no one can create a source of energy that doesn’t destroy the planet or isn’t incredibly costly.

This is in the middle of a desert – a very HOT desert where temperatures get up to 120 degrees F and where the ski complex has to be maintained at low temperatures all the time.
Unbelievable, but it is true!
Most people struggle to save energy and cope with the rising prices of food, fuel and most essential items. However, the Arabs can build what they like!

Dubais a great spot. To all you belingering, moaning half wits who constantly complain about poverty – get off your butts and join a charity and do something about it. Arabs having oil is not the issue. Your attitudes are.
The money the Government here earn is returned to the people (remember no tax) in the form of a better lifestyle, fantastic infrastructure and the future. Very few countries can boast the same with their democratic institutions – 4 years in power, 4 years to do what they want and not be held accountable. Here the rulers hold themselves accountable and look after their own (and other residencts like myself).
Come visit Dubai – it truelly is a wonder of the world.

I’m sorry i can tell that generally most people seem to think this is the best thing, but honestly there are so many more problems going on in the world right now, and the money to build up this island could have gone to millions of other places, this is just a big expensive park thats going to get a hand full of people rich, and leave millions more suffering, its a complete waste. And yes the citizens there have it so much better, but they are not the only people on this world, so i find the whole attitude a little grotesque, and honestly if sea levels rise like the expect all this should be gone within the next fifty years anyhow, so once again what a waste.

I live in Dubai and, believe me, it’s a crazy place. There are heaps of amazing things about this place, but it’s growing too fast to keep pace. The roading system is a nightmare and nothing ever seems to get finished. If you decide to visit plan for lots of time to get to and from places because the traffic is hideous. Plus, bring a lot of money with you as everything is disgustingly expensive. It’s definitely an experience to see this place, but when you live here, the facade certainly does not last for long.
